Claude Code API Error 429 rate limited: how to fix it
A 429 means requests arrived faster, or more at once, than the rate and concurrency limits allow. It is about how you send requests, not about your balance or your key.

The error text
API Error: 429 {"type":"error","error":{"type":"rate_limit_error","message":"..."}}What it means
Pay-as-you-go API usage has no 5-hour or weekly allowance, but it does have rate and concurrency limits. When a burst of requests goes over them, the extra requests get 429 and can be retried shortly after.
| Message | What it is |
|---|---|
| API Error: 429 rate_limit_error | Rate or concurrency limit on the API |
| You've hit your session limit · resets ... | Claude plan allowance; Claude Code is still on your plan login |
| API Error: 529 overloaded_error | Model capacity, not your request rate |
Step-by-step fix
1. Lower parallelism
Close extra Claude Code sessions and ask for fewer parallel subagents. Scripts and CI jobs sharing the same key count too.
2. Wait and retry
Pause briefly and send the message again.
3. Split keys
Give each teammate or pipeline its own key so one busy job is easy to spot in usage records.
4. Check balance and caps
If the error mentions balance or a spend cap instead, top up or raise the key's cap.
How to avoid it
- Keep the number of concurrent agents modest.
- Add retry with backoff to scripts and CI.
- Use /compact and /clear so each turn sends less context.
Are failed requests charged?
Failed requests (4xx/5xx, timeouts, dropped connections) are not charged — you're only billed for requests that complete successfully. If an upstream failure is automatically retried and succeeds, you're billed once.
Still failing?
- Check the model's page on aicodewith: it shows recent health for each channel.
- Look up the request in your dashboard usage records to see its model, status and cost.
- Email support@aicodewith.com with the time of the error, the model and the error text (never your full API key).
FAQ
What does Claude Code error 429 mean?
Your requests went over a rate or concurrency limit. Run fewer agents in parallel, wait a moment and retry.
Is there a fixed requests-per-minute number?
Rate and concurrency limits apply to every account, and they can change. If you plan heavy parallel workloads, check the docs or contact support.
Is 429 the same as hitting my Claude plan limit?
No. Plan limits show messages like "You've hit your session limit". A 429 rate_limit_error comes from the API's rate limits.
Do scripts using the same key count toward the limit?
Yes. Every request from the account counts, so a busy CI job can cause 429s in your interactive session. Separate keys make this easy to spot.
Will a bigger balance remove 429 errors?
Not by itself. 429 is about request rate and concurrency, not balance.
Am I charged for failed requests?
Failed requests (4xx/5xx, timeouts, dropped connections) are not charged — you're only billed for requests that complete successfully. If an upstream failure is automatically retried and succeeds, you're billed once.
Ready to try it?
Billing is per token from a prepaid balance. Rate and concurrency limits apply, and you can set daily, monthly or total spend caps on each API key.
