How to fix the IntelliJ IDEA plugin not finding Claude Code CLI

Claude Code with GUI does not take a Provider inside IDEA; it reads the local Claude Code CLI. If it cannot find the claude command, confirm the CLI is installed and visible to the IDEA process.

The plugin depends on the local Claude Code CLI, but the current environment cannot find the claude command.

  • The plugin reports that the Claude command is missing, or it cannot read the local config.
  • Claude Code CLI is not installed on this machine
  • Run claude --version in a terminal to confirm the CLI is installed

Confirm the CLI is installed

Run claude --version in a system terminal. If the command is missing, the plugin cannot read the local config — install Claude Code CLI first instead of changing plugin settings.

Make the CLI visible to IDEA

IDEA launched from the GUI may not inherit the terminal PATH. Start IDEA from a terminal that already has the CLI, or add the claude directory to the graphical session PATH.

Restart and verify

After installing or fixing PATH, fully quit IDEA and open it again. If the plugin can open chat and send a message, the process found the CLI.
