AI paper reading: search and write reading notes in one prompt

Ask Claude Code to search papers and read them one by one, then output notes with sources. It queries the official arXiv API by date, picks the most relevant papers, reads abstracts and full text, and writes title, authors, link, method, results, and limits as Markdown notes.

  • ✓Found 5 papers from 2026, close-read 3 of them into notes, 281 seconds end to end
  • ✓All 5 arXiv links opened and titles matched the notes (rechecked 2026-10-15)
  • ✓No extra third-party key and no skill install

Set up once: point the global config at AICodeWith

Do this once; every use case reuses it. Other tools: integration guides. Where to get a key: Get an API key.

  1. 1. Install Claude Code

    Follow the official Claude Code install docs. You are done when claude --version prints a version number.

  2. 2. Create a key and edit the global config

    Sign in, open the dashboard **Key Management** page, and create a key. If you are not sure where that is, see Get an API key.

    Open the global config ~/.claude/settings.json and set the Base URL and key under env:

    ~/.claude/settings.json
    {
      "env": {
        "ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL": "https://api.aicodewith.ai",
        "ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN": "sk-YOUR_KEY"
      }
    }

    Do not add /v1 at the end of the Base URL. Reopen the terminal, run claude, and a normal reply means the connection works.

Tested steps

  1. 1. Search and close-read in one prompt

    Create an empty folder, run claude inside it, and specify the topic, count, source, and note format:

    text
    Find 5 recent 2026 arXiv papers on "automated program repair with LLM agents". Use the official arXiv API and sort by publication date. Pick the 3 most relevant, read each abstract (and introduction plus conclusion when HTML full text exists), and write notes per paper: title, authors, arXiv link, date, problem, method, main results with numbers, limitations. Save as papers-notes.md and add a short comparison of the three. Do not invent papers; every link must open.

    Replace the topic in quotes with yours. Keep “Do not invent papers; every link must open” — it will verify the links.
  2. 2. Check the numbers against the PDFs

    When it finishes, papers-notes.md has a candidate table, close-read notes, and a three-paper comparison.

    Experiment numbers are copied from the papers. Check them against the originals before you cite them.

Troubleshooting

Search results are off-topic
Put English keywords in the prompt, or ask it to print the query so you can edit it.
401 or request failed
Check that the key is complete and the Base URL is https://api.aicodewith.ai (no /v1). Reopen the terminal after you change it.

FAQ

Will AI invent papers?

The prompt requires the official arXiv API, no invented papers, and working links. In our run all 5 links opened and titles matched. Still open them yourself.

Is it arXiv only?

This page tested arXiv. Other sources need to be publicly reachable; we have not tested them.

How long does it take?

Searching 5 and close-reading 3 took 281 seconds.
